Thirteen houses, including a fuel depot and kitchens, were burnt down at Naharahau village, Wainoni, in East Makira over the weekend.
The incident occurred on 13 September 2026, when a group of people allegedly set fire to dwelling houses and kitchens and destroyed food gardens.
Provincial Police Commander (PPC) for Makira-Ulawa Province, Superintendent Gordon Horomae, said Kirakira Police have responded to the report and engaged with both parties involved.
PPC Horomae said it was alleged the incident may have been carried out in retaliation for the death of a relative of the arson group.
Superintendent Horomae said the group believes the death was caused by a person alleged to have practised sorcery from Naharahau village.
PPC Horomae said the situation is under control and more officers will be deployed to investigate the detailed circumstances surrounding the burning incident.
Police have appealed to both parties to immediately refrain from criminal activities and cooperate with police to allow the matter to be properly investigated.
